Getting High

I have spent the last few hours high.

Now, don’t think I’m into drugs or booze or any illicit ways to get high. I’m talking about a creative high, here.

Scott and I are writing the next story arc to Johnny Saturn. There is a LOT going on in this story, several different plot lines with many new characters, all weaving in and out of each other to tell an over all story. We are very excited about this story and telling it is important to us on many different levels.

Back to being high. Scott and I call it a creative high, but it has been called writer’s high, artist’s high, musician’s high, etc. I have spoken with many creative people. Some get this feeling and some don’t. Some who have experienced a creative high and have taken drugs say the feeling is similar.

Let me say one thing, from my own experience. It is the best feeling in the world. The scene I wrote for JS is very intense and somewhat painful, but I HAD to write it and get it out of my system. I went over it several times in my head and realized that it was not going to leave me alone until I got it on paper. And, then, once I had written it, no, LIVED it while recording what I saw, felt, heard, etc., I was so hyped up on this energy that I couldn’t relax. I have all this incredible imagery going though my head – pictures I wanted to draw and paint, only I can’t draw or paint. Luckily, I have a husband and creative partner who can, so I gave him the details of the picture I need drawn and he can do it. I’ve even offered to pose for the different parts because I want this to be exactly what I see in my head.

So, these questions goes out to other creative people who might see this. Do you ever have this feeling from creating something? Does it come easily or only when you have immersed your entire being into a project, story, score, whatever it is you do? What is this feeling like for you and how do you handle it? Please be as detailed as you want in your answer, because I truly am curious and I think others will be, too.
